MPP Aggelonitis Honoured Sophia Aggelonitis garners ‘Friend of Mohawk College’ award, nomination for Favourite Local Politician
QUEEN’S PARK – Sophia Aggelonitis, MPP for Hamilton Mountain, has been recognized by two leading organizations for her work in the community.

On Sept. 2, Aggelonitis was the co-recipient of the first ever Friends of Mohawk College award, presented by Mohawk College president Rob MacIsaac. She shared the award with her colleague, Hon. Ted McMeekin, Minister of Consumer Services and MPP for Ancaster-Flamborough-Dundas-Westdale.

"Whether at Queen's Park or in our community, Minister McMeekin and Sophia are advocating on behalf of our students and championing Mohawk College," said MacIsaac.

Aggelonitis has also been nominated for Favourite Local Politician in the Hamilton Spectator’s 2009 Readers Choice Awards. This award, which will be presented at the end of September, will be chosen based on the votes of Hamilton community members.

“I am thrilled to be recognized by these fantastic organizations,” said Aggelonitis. “It really inspires me to continue my work on behalf of the residents of Hamilton Mountain.”

Aggelonitis was elected to represent Hamilton Mountain in 2007. She currently serves as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (Small Business).

Prior to her election, Aggelonitis ran a successful small business and served on the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce for four years before being elected president in 2007. In addition to being an active member of the Hamilton AM Rotary Club, Sophia has been involved in a variety of community organizations, serving on the boards of the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice, Theatre Aquarius, Canadian Club of Hamilton and Phoenix Place.
