Governments of Canada and Ontario Announce Improvements Along the GO Transit Lakeshore West Corridor
HAMILTON - GO Transit commuters using the Lakeshore West Corridor will benefit from joint federal and provincial funding to separate the rail-to-rail grade at Hamilton Junction, west of Aldershot GO station David Sweet, MP and Ted McMeekin, MPP Ancaster--Dundas—Flamborough - Westdale, announced today.
This $75.5 million rail-to-rail grade separation project will increase reliability and improve GO train service once construction is completed in 2014.
This project is just one example of the federal and provincial governments working together to create jobs and to improve services for families, while improving Ontario’s competitiveness over the long run.
“Today's announcement is a clear example of our governments working together to create jobs and keep our economy moving,” said Canada’s Transport and Infrastructure Minister John Baird. "These investments will also improve the daily commutes of approximately 200,000 residents who rely on GO transit to get to and from work every day."
“In continuing our investments in GO Transit, we are making it easier for people to get out of their cars and take transit,” said Jim Bradley, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation. “Supporting public transit is part of our plan to combat both congestion and climate change.
“The McGuinty government is investing in Ontario’s infrastructure to create jobs and build better transit and this project will improve service for the thousands of riders that depend on GO,” said MPP Ted McMeekin, Ancaster--Dundas—Flamborough – Westdale.
"This is great news for Hamilton and Hamiltonians,” said Sophia Aggelonitis, MPP for Hamilton Mountain. “This significant investment in our GO Transit system will deliver both improved train service and a strengthened economy for Hamilton.”
"I'm pleased that the federal and provincial governments are working together to create jobs and to improve services for families in our area," said David Sweet, MP for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale. "Today's announcement, part of the Building Canada commitment in the federal budget, is the kind of infrastructure investment that helps the economy today while also answering the growing need for GO services in our communities in the long term."
This project is one part of a $500 million GO Transit revitalization project that will improve GO Transit service across the Greater Toronto Area.
